This ornament depicts the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, the family home and birthplace of the founder of Girl Scouts. In the 1950s, Girl Scouts raised money to save the house, which was at risk of being demolished. They imagined a site where “girls could talk about their dreams, their ambitions, ways of serving their country, and ways of making new friends.” Yet Savannah at that time was racially segregated. Troop leaders asked if the house would be open to every girl, regardless of race? The answer: yes. Continuing in this tradition, Girls Scouts of the USA has worked to make the Birthplace more accessible. In the early 2000s, an elevator was added to the house. Starting in 2019, the Birthplace’s accessibility improved further with features such as ramps, more accessible bathrooms, and a modern building constructed to connect the east and west outbuildings with an elevator. This ornament is made from brass and measures W = 3.44” X H = 3.02.”
